Through close observation and handling of specimens, children explored how animals have evolved to adapt to survive in their particular habitats. We looked at Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace’s work on natural selection and examined some of the fossil evidence that reveals the history of life on our planet. Children touched real specimens, from elephant teeth and polar bear paws to huge python skins and gliding lizards.    

]]> Thu, 26 Mar 2026 08:52:42 GMT https://www.woodstock.oxon.sch.uk/news/?pid=30&nid=2&storyid=31 <![CDATA[ World Day of Prayer ]]> https://www.woodstock.oxon.sch.uk/news/?pid=30&nid=2&storyid=30 The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement led by Christian women of many traditions who call people together for a special day of prayer on the first Friday in March. More than 120 countries participate in an annual day of celebration which brings together people of various races, cultures and traditions sharing God’s word and worship. This year, we prayed for the people of Nigeria. 

Children in Year 5 enjoyed a morning with the ladies from the churches in Woodstock, preparing resources for the service which included tasting traditional Nigerian foods, decorating stones with positive words and preparing headdresses to wear during the World Day of Prayer service, which took place at Mary Magdalen church on Friday 6 March. The service was an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, sing and share prayers for the people of Nigeria. 

We were also very fortunate to learn more about the country of Nigeria from parents who came to share their Nigerian traditions and culture with the children.

It was wonderful to see so many amazing and creative outfits, bringing stories and characters to life throughout the school. The effort and imagination that went into the costumes was fantastic, and it made for a fun and memorable day celebrating our love of books and reading.

We explored the animals and the habitats they live in, linking to our recent Science work. We have also been exploring different climates in Geography.

We had practised for many weeks, and it was incredible to come together to sing with thousands of other primary school children in the arena. Highlights of the day included performing for our family and friends and watching inspirational singers and street dancers.

The children arrived dressed as characters from the stories and took part in a range of creative activities, including making their own Narnia-themed snow globes. The day was filled with imagination, excitement and a real sense of wonder, setting the scene perfectly for our new topic.

Thank you to those who took part; you sang beautifully. 

If you are passing the Methodist church, please pop in to view the Christmas tree display. Our tree is decorated with the 37 flags that represent the countries within our school community.

Key Stage 1 delighted families, staff, and friends with a wonderful performance of our Christmas Nativity. The children have been working incredibly hard over the past few weeks, learning lines, songs, and actions, and their efforts truly shone through. 

Every child had an important role to play—whether acting, singing, dancing, or narrating—and the enthusiasm on stage was clear to see. The songs were beautifully performed, and the children’s confidence grew with every verse. Their costumes looked fantastic against the backdrop of twinkling stars, hand-made props, and the cosy stable scene.

We also enjoyed capturing lots of special moments on camera. These photos show just how much joy and pride the children felt throughout the performance. From shy smiles to big stage grins, each picture reflects the teamwork and excitement that went into sharing this wonderful story.

We are incredibly proud of all our KS1 pupils for their hard work and dedication. Thank you to families for supporting children with learning costumes and songs at home, and to staff for helping to bring the performance together.

It was a truly magical way to celebrate the festive season!

Each child competed in four events: a 75m sprint, 600m run, standing long jump, and vortex throw. Scores from each event were combined to give an overall team total.

The event brought together schools from across the area and provided a great opportunity for pupils to take part in friendly competition and enjoy a range of athletic challenges
