Music in the Woods
At Forest school, the children really love exploring music making in the woods. We talked about the different noises materials make and what they could use to make musical instruments. The tree-trunk drum kit is a huge hit. Groups of children form their own band and ‘rock out’ their made up songs. Using some of the tools, a group of children made African Hand drums. They carefully used the bow saw to create the drum, a palm drill to make the holes and then a tent peg to thread wool through the beads. The children also decided to make a tree-trunk elastic band drum. To do this, they each hammered in a nail to the tree trunk and then put an elastic band around the nail. They loved ‘twanging’ the bands and singing along.
